About Absente

ドガという画家をご存知ですか？

詳しい事はWikipediaで調べてもらうことにして、19世紀
当時流行のリアリズムを追求した、ちょっと暗い画風が

特徴の画家です。

僕はドガの絵が大好きなのですが、その中でも好きなのが

「カフェにて」（または「アブサン酒」）（1876年）という絵。

うらぶれたカフェの片隅に女と男が静かに腰をおろしていて、

その前のテーブルに は白濁した「アブサント（アブサン酒）」

という聴き慣れない名前の酒が置かれています。

この「アブサント」とは何か気になり調べました。

フランス語では「アブサン」と発音するらしく、18世紀末に

発明された蒸留酒で、主に苦蓬（ニガヨモギ）などから作ら

れるそうです。

19世紀中頃になって、ロートレック、ゴッホ、ピカソなど

多くの芸術家が愛飲するようになったらしく、ドガも例外

ではありませんでした。

「アブサント」は、強いアルコール性で彼らの想像力を

昂ぶらせてくれる一種の麻薬や覚醒剤のような存在であり、

いわば、世紀末を象徴する酒とのことです。

彼らのような、「アブサント」に魅入られてしまった人々を

「アブサニスト」というようです。

一方で、「アブサント」はその毒性が指摘されていたらしく、

常飲すると、苦蓬に含まれる成分が神経系統に障害をもたらす

ことが認められ、1915年にフランス政府が製造・販売を全面

禁止したのを最後に「幻の酒」となりました。

「ゴッホが奇行に走ったのは、アブサントのせいだ」などという

まことしやかな話も出ていたそうです。

（※現在ではヨーロッパ基準に添った「アブサント」がリキュール

として販売されており、日本でも購入可能）

余談ですが、呑んべえの野球選手を主人公にした、水島新司の

名作野球漫画「あぶさん」。

実は、この酒が名前の由来となっているそうです。
